At MTO Group, innovation and sustainability are at the core of our forestry operations. As part of our continuous effort to advance research and development, members of our research team recently participated in a specialised tree climbing course. Led by Gavin Raubenheimer from Peak High Mountaineering, this training equipped our team with the essential skills required to safely climb trees and collect critical materials for our tree breeding initiatives.

Why Tree Climbing Training is Essential
MTO’s research team plays a crucial role in the improvement and sustainability of our forestry operations. A key component of their work involves collecting scions, pollen, and seeds from superior trees - materials essential for tree breeding and genetic improvement. Often, these collections take place at heights exceeding 20 meters, requiring the use of ladders, tree bicycles, and proper climbing techniques.

The tree climbing course ensured that our team members are well-trained to safely navigate these heights. Working in pairs, one team member climbs while another acts as a belayer, ensuring the climber’s stability and safety. This training was conducted under the guidance of a certified expert, ensuring compliance with SABS safety standards and the use of proper protective equipment.

A Commitment to Research & Development
MTO is deeply invested in research and development to enhance the sustainability and productivity of our forestry practices. Our research spans various fields, including tree breeding, forestry planning, and environmental management. As a member of Camcore, an international tree-breeding organisation, since 1996, MTO has remained at the forefront of developing trees with increased yields, superior wood quality, and enhanced disease resistance.
By continuously improving our breeding programs and working alongside global forestry institutes, we ensure that our forestry practices meet today’s demands while preserving resources for future generations.

Recognising Our Team’s Achievement
The following MTO employees successfully completed the tree climbing course, further strengthening our research capabilities: Melani Appels, Hazel Oelf, Jadrian Matroos, Arnold Oelf, Andre Kiewiets, Jerome Harker, Mornay Draai
Their dedication and expertise continue to drive MTO’s research initiatives forward, ensuring that we maintain industry-leading practices in sustainable forestry.
Looking Ahead
As we advance our tree breeding and forestry research efforts, the skills acquired during this training will prove invaluable in securing high-quality genetic material for future planting. Our investment in ongoing training and research ensures that MTO remains a leader in responsible and sustainable forestry.
